Wind power will become the second largest source of electricity in Brazil this year

Abstract from CCTV News Network

Located in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Nord in Brazil, it has a long coastline and year-round stable and sustained wind resources. In recent years, a group of wind farms have emerged in this picturesque "Golden Coast", with wind turbines tens of meters high in stark contrast to the surrounding pristine natural scenery.

Brazil has abundant wind energy resources, mainly distributed in the northeast, southeast and southern regions. Superior natural conditions have made Brazil the largest wind energy market in Latin America, ranking eighth in the world in terms of installed wind power capacity. Recent data from the Global Wind Energy Council shows that the Americas accounted for 25 percent of new wind capacity installed worldwide last year.

According to the Brazilian Wind Power Association, as of the end of 2018, Brazil had 583 wind farms with 14.7 million kilowatts of installed wind power capacity. Elbea Gannam, the association''s executive chairman, expects wind power to overtake biomass as Brazil''s second largest source of electricity this year. "This is a historic achievement for an industry that has been in development for less than 10 years. When the Brazilian wind industry started in 2011, it had less than 1 GW of installed capacity." "Gunnum said.

Traditionally, Brazil has relied mainly on hydropower. However, in recent years, affected by climate change, drought has occurred from time to time in some areas that rely on hydropower, which has reduced the stability of hydropower generation and increased the cost of power generation. Seasonal changes in wind and hydropower complement each other, and when there is less rain in Brazil, the wind tends to be stronger and generate more electricity.

Under Brazil''s National Alternative Energy Incentive Program, the government encourages the development of renewable energy by offering long-term contracts with high electricity generation prices to wind farms, biomass power plants and small hydropower plants. The program has helped Brazil establish a supply and demand market for wind power and laid the foundation for the development of the wind power industry.

Brazil has also introduced an auction mechanism for renewable energy projects and has held a series of bidding specifically for wind power projects since 2009. Approved projects can participate in bidding. This auction mechanism has attracted numerous participants, greatly promoting the development of the Brazilian wind power industry and also driving the continuous decline of wind power prices.

To ensure the funding source for wind power development, the Brazilian National Development Bank has provided specialized low interest loans for wind power projects. As a condition for obtaining a loan, manufacturers must use a certain proportion of Brazilian domestic equipment. This has to some extent increased local employment and promoted the development of the entire industrial chain.

The Brazilian Wind Power Association predicts that by 2024, Brazil''s installed wind energy capacity will reach 19 million kilowatts.
