Africa can use new energy sources to overcome power shortages

Release time:2017-04-17   Click:79

Abstract from China New Energy Network

The World Bank and the International Energy Agency (IEA) recently released a report that the African continent has the lowest per capita electricity consumption in the world. In 2014, only 37% of Africa''s population had access to electricity. Currently, approximately 1.6 billion people worldwide have no access to electricity, of which 45% come from rural areas in Africa, and another 10% of the African urban population have no access to electricity. Power shortages have become an important factor restricting the development of the African continent. At the same time, the demand for energy in Africa is increasing, reaching 100 TWh by 2030, approximately three times the amount in 2010.

The report argues that, given the continent''s abundant untapped renewable resources such as wind and solar power, African countries can establish a regional grid connection system to achieve power sharing, so as to solve the problem of power shortages. Angola, Botswana, Egypt, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and other 21 African countries are suitable for the development of renewable energy, can increase investment in renewable energy development, reduce the cost of electricity production.
